This course is designed to introduce knitters to the basic structures of lace knitting. Topics covered include chart-reading, hard and soft cast-ons and bind-offs, yarn overs and directional decreasing, planning lace projects, lace gauges and fabrics, reading your knitting, knitted-on edgings, and proper blocking techniques. We will begin working a lace sampler with simple motifs to accompany the topics covered in class.
PRE-REQUISITES
Knitters should be comfortable with the following techniques:
• Knit and purl stitches
• Yarn overs
• Simple decreases (K2TOG, SSK, & SKPSSO)
• Some chart-reading experience is recommended but not required.
MATERIALS LIST
• One skein (50g or 100g) of DK-weight wool or wool blend yarn (animal fibers only please). Woolen spun 2-ply yarns for are recommended. Light colored yarns are better for improved stitch visibility. Bouclé and novelty yarns prohibited. “Woolly yarns” like Shetland, are particularly suited for the blocking techniques we will be discussing
• One pair of US8 needles, at least 8” in length
• Crochet hook 1 or 2 sizes smaller than your knitting needles
• A length of waste yarn for working a Provisional Cast On
• One packet of stitch markers
• Notebook and writing utensil for note taking
